Types of blood cells
● White blood cells (leukocytes, fight infections)
● Platelets (help blood clot)
● Red blood cells (erythrocytes, carry oxygen from lungs to
organs and CO2 from organs to lungs)
To produce hemoglobin and red blood cells, the body needs iron,
other minerals, protein and vitamins.
Causes of anemia
There are many causes of anemia:
poor diet, heredity, prolonged exhaustion,
alcohol, pregnancy
and environmental causes
Common types of anemia
● Iron deficiency anemia
● Vitamin deficiency anemias. Mainly folate and vitamin B-12
● Chronic disease anemia.
Cancer,
HIV AIDS,
arthritis,
Crohn's
disease, kidney failure and other chronic diseases can cause
anemia
● Aplastic anemia. Rare but can be fatal
● Bone marrow disease anemia. Such as
leukemia,
myelodysplasia and lymphoma
● Hemolytic anemias. Some medications such as some
antibiotics and
arthritis medications can cause this anemia
● Sickle cell anemia. This is common in people of African,
Arabic and Mediterranean descent.
● Other anemias. Such as thalassemia
