Herpes sores are caused by a virus that spreads easily. There are two types of herpes. Oral herpes and genital herpes. Oral herpes is more common and less harmful. It is transmitted by direct contact to the infected area. Genital herpes is transmitted primarily by sexual contact. Symptoms of genital herpes include pain, itching and sores in genital area.

The Herpes family of viruses consists of at least 8 viruses that cause disease. In addition to herpes simplex types 1 and 2 , the other identified herpes viruses are:

● Varicella zoster virus (VZV): causes herpes zoster (shingles). Herpes zoster lives in a dormant state in certain nerve roots and is reactivated during times of stress and lowered immunity. It is not life threatening but can be very painful.

● Epstein-Barr virus (EBV): a virus that causes infectious mononucleosis and acute tonsillitis. EBV can also induce tumors such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

● Cytomegalovirus (CMV): a virus that causes mononucleosis-type illness.

● Human herpes virus-6 (HHV-6).

● Human herpes virus-7 (HHV-7): associated with mononucleosis.

● Human herpes virus-8 (HHV-8): associated with Kaposi's sarcoma

Traditional herpes treatments

There's no cure for recurring oral or genital herpes in traditional medicine. But medications are used to lessen the severity and frequency of herpes attacks.

Antiviral drugs

● Acyclovir (Zovirax)

● Valacyclovir (Valtrex)

● Famciclovir (Famvir)

Pain management

● Narcotics, such as oxycodone

● Tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline

● Anticonvulsants, such as gabapentin (Neurontin)

● Numbing agents, such as lidocaine, delivered via a cream, gel, spray or skin patch
